The Florida Department of Commerce (Florida Commerce) is making available $400 million in CDBG-DR funding for communities impacted by Hurricanes Idalia, Debby, Helene, Milton, and/or the 2024 North Florida Tornadoes.
Suwannee County intends to apply for grant funds to the Rebuild Florida Infrastructure Repair Program for a Regional Shelter Project (~ $75,000,000) that entails the acquisition of land and the construction of a regional shelter in Suwannee County that will be accessible to Suwanee County residents and adjacent/surrounding counties including but not limited to Lafayette, Madison, Hamilton, Columbia, Taylor, Dixie, Levy, and Gilchrist Counties. This facility will accommodate those with special needs as well as serve the general population during times of emergency.
A public hearing will be held to provide citizens the opportunity to comment on the proposed application on September 15, 2025, at 5:30 PM at the Suwannee County Judicial Annex, 218 Parshley Street SW, Live Oak, Florida 32064.
A draft copy of the application will be available for review beginning September 9, 2025 at 9:00 AM at the Suwannee County Administrative Offices and online at www.suwanneecountyfl.gov/public-notices/. Written comments may be submitted to Jason Furry, Assistant County Administrator, by email at [email protected] or submitted to the Suwannee County Administrative Offices, 224 Pine Avenue, Live Oak, Florida 32064, no later than September 26, 2025, at 5:00 PM. Final application(s) will be available for review at the Suwannee County Administrative Offices during normal business hours, and will be submitted to Florida Commerce on or before September 29, 2025.
