PREPPING FOR HURRICANE HELENE DEBRIS REMOVAL

As a reminder, when you are cleaning up your property in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, be sure to sort your debris into 6 separate piles, which are listed below. This sorting process allows responding crews to expedite the removal process.

  1. Electronics, such as televisions, computers or phones.
  2. Large appliances, such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves or dishwashers.
  3. Hazardous waste, such as oil, batteries, pesticides, paint or cleaning supplies.
  4. Vegetative debris, such as tree branches, leaves or plants.
  5. Construction debris such as building materials, carpeting, furniture and mattresses.
  6. Household garbage, such as discarded food, paper or boxes will be taken care of in the normal method and should NOT be combined with hurricane debris.

It is important that you exercise caution, use proper safety gear, and place debris away from downed trees or power lines that might prevent crews from being able to access it.

As further information becomes available about debris removal, we will update you!

Debris Cleanup

As our county continues to recover from the effects of Hurricane Debby, the Suwannee County Board of County Commissioners and the Suwannee County Division of Emergency Management have worked to establish debris cleanup for the recent event.

Debris crews will begin the process of picking up vegetative debris and construction and demolition (C&D) debris from the right-of-way on county-maintained roads.  Crews will be working in the county/city/towns to collect and dispose of debris. Pickup and disposal will continue until October 6, 2024.   All debris set in the right-of-way for pickup must not be stacked too close to the road where it can potentially cause a safety hazard for roadway traffic.

This cleanup period is for residential vegetative and C&D debris only.   The pickup service is not for commercial use or land clearing.  Additionally, debris teams will not enter private property or private roads to gather debris.

Please place your storm debris in the County right-of-way by September 22, 2024.

If you have any questions, please call the Division of Emergency Management at 386-364-3405
